Shards of a shattered sky
Scattered on sea spray,
Tossed on the back of a stallion storm –
The frowning face of the firmament has been torn,
Scarred by lightning,
Bruised with purple clouds.
Cowed by Thor’s thunder,
Heaven is going under.
Heaven is going under,
Cowed by Thor’s thunder.
Bruised with purple clouds,
Scarred by lightning,
The frowning face of the firmament has been torn,
Tossed on the back of a stallion storm –
Scattered on sea spray,
Shards of a shattered sky.

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Open Link #180, where Björn is our host tonight.
I tried my hand at a mirror poem (also known as palindrome or specular poem) today. I was driving to the library yesterday morning and I just got a flashback of those wild late autumn and winter storms, which often batter the North Norfolk coast. I’m so looking forward to them!
great writing

You have captured the feel of a great storm perfectly, though I doubt Thor has the ability to topple Heaven. 😉

I do like storms and your expressions of the violence rent upon the land is very apt.

When I read your poem, with those rhymes I first thought of a romantic painting with a ship in storm with torn sails… wonderful how words can be a painting.

I thought I had a download of a painting of just that scene but it must have been on my old PC. There is a Norfolk artist who really does this coast justice. Look this guy up on Facebook: Big Norfolk Skies
@BigNorfolkSkies. Thanks for your comments, Bjorn 🙂

Very atmospheric, well-executed palindrome that is just alive with the right amount of alliteration. Much enjoyed.

Haven’t seen a palindrome for a while; yours is yummy scary. We are 100 miles from the coast here, but love to rent cottages by the sea in winter, to sit warm & snug facing a picture window, watching the huge waves battering the beach; negative ions & soaring surf are the dope, & beach combing post-storm is always hip & rich with booty.

I agree about the negative ions and soaring surf, Glenn. Unfortunately, we don’t get much washed up on our beaches any more – just seaweed and the odd plastic bottle.

Thanks Mish. The ‘shards of shattered sky’ popped into my head on the way to the library on Wednesday . I had to keep repeating them to myself while I was driving and when I got there I spoke the words into One Note on my mobile in case I forgot them!
