Art Therapy

The child deconstructs
her picture, scraping curls
of black crayon; swirls
of firework wraiths appear
and a hive of red, orange
and yellow bees swarms
from the smoke of a waxy night.

Opposite her, a woman, bright
and bedizened in gold rings,
ear hoops and bangles
that glitter in the flecks
of kind eyes, searches
the little girl’s filthy face,
a convex mirror,
for signs of alexithymia.

In an effort to seduce
her patient out of her comfort zone,
the art therapist starts to produce
a crayon picture of her own.

At the end of the hour,
when they say their goodbyes,
each of them has a keepsake:
a view through each other’s eyes.
