Shadows
spill into living rooms;
at four o’clock, car headlights blaze,
terrace windows glow
and televisions
flicker.
The trees know:
their sap retreats, they shed their leaves,
drops of colour pooling where they stand,
swirls of colour blowing
in the wind.
Every
afternoon, well before three,
I pull on hat, gloves and Wellington greens
for a soft-shoe shuffle
through damp
leaves.
The trees know:
festooned with strings of scarlet
berries and a last golden splash,
in the smoke and ash
of the year.

The trees know.. indeed they do. You have great attention to detail, Kim.

Kim – GORGEOUS picture — and lovely descriptions of a changing season and ever-ticking time of the yearly clock (even when we turn it back…) Thanks for sharing again!

yes, and the color doesn’t really matter one way or another to the trees – we are the ones who glory in that. I like the you tied it all in to the turning back of time
