I wrote you a love poem but I can’t remember
how I found you: you were simply there,
when the day before you were not.
Your black and white circus of dreams
was marvellously prefabricated
and you easily enchanted
me into your circular paths,
drew me to your bonfire’s heat.
Your acrobats and fortune-tellers thrilled,
and your magicians cast a romantic spell.
I read you in one night of passion –
woke up and read you all over again.

My response to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads Weekend Mini-Challenge: My Dearest Book, I Wrote You a Poem…
Magaly welcomes us to another Weekend Mini-Challenge and reminds us that yesterday was International Literacy Day. She wants us to mark the occasion by writing a poem to a book. Not a poem about a book. Not a book review shaped as a poem. She invites us to write a new poem dedicated to a novel or a poetry collection we love. In the poem, we can choose to tell our book anything we like: how we feel about its words, or what reading its words has done to or for us, or how we miss it when we don’t read if for a while. We may use the poetic form of our choice, but our poems should contain 131 words or fewer and Magaly asks us to please share the book title.
I chose to write my poem to The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Oh I love those kinds of reads…right through. Don’t know the book though. This new reading list is growing by the poem.

I love those books which you essentially have to read until the end no matter if you sleep or not… I remember a few books I have read like that… .

I absolutely adore this novel. And I completely understand the first passionate reading and then the delight of doing it again. I might have to reread it soon… Just because I’m feeling all circus-dark-and-romantic. 😀

And then we have Cirque de Freak – both of these books are so magical, dark, and full of surprises. I am not surprised you read this one straight through and re-read the next day. The way we do with all the books that we fall in love with. I like that this book, The Night Circus was so influential on you. Now I see where you get your love of the gothic and macabre! I fell in love with Dracula when I was about 8 for the same reason. I love this book. Time for a reread! Thank you.

How wonderful! As I read, it was lovely to recognised that it was that book. Definitely one to inspire passion! (You might also love a trilogy called The Immortal Circus by A. R. Kahler.)
