Pale yellow-green tears
pool in the fruit bowl.
I choose one with a blush,
hoping its shyness foretells flavour.
Under a running tap,
my pear gleams and drips.
I use a tea towel to dab away its fears,
buff the delicate skin,
inhale its honey breath.
I bare my teeth,
sink them into gritty flesh,
taste aromatic spice
and my mouth overflows
with a rainfall of sweetness.

Sanaa is our host this Thursday and she would like us to write poems about fruit. She says it shouldn’t be just any ordinary, everyday item on the dining table but our best-loved fruit, the fruit that makes our mouths water. She wants us to pen-savour every last detail.
Oh gosh this is absolutely stunning, Kim!❤️ I love the idea of blush of that pear foretelling its flavour 😀 sigh .. such a passionate write. Thank you so much for writing to the prompt!❤️

You make me want to sink my teeth into that pear, but I do love how you treat it with such amazing tenderness before… It becomes almost like a tea-ceremony

I loe that rainfall of sweetness. The treatment of a pear has a tenderness to it, a meditative quality before the first bite.

As a kid we had a pear tree. I would climb up in it and pick the ripest one from the top. OMG, you don’t get that flavor from a fruit stand or super market; more’s the pity. Even if the blush is on the skin, it is either pulpy or mushy.

As a teenager in Germany, I lived in a little house in a small orchard, next to a cherry and a plum tree. We also had pears and apples. We made various tarts, preserves and Rumtopf with the fruit. I think my love of pears started then. The cherries came a a good second!

This reminds me of the pears of my youth – those I buy today seem to have lost their flavour. I’d give anything for a ripe, juicy pear right now.

I just love the idea of the blush of a pear speaking of her flavor. I wonder if it has been saving herself for the right mouth, waiting to be enjoyed exactly she wanted it… Yum!
