My response to Carpe Diem #1487 Dance of the Spider (Tarantella)
This is the first episode of a new month of Carpe Diem Haiku Kai, when we will be going on a journey around the world on a quest for folk music, starting in Southern Italy with the Tarantella. Chèvrefeuille explains that the Tarantella is a group of various folk dances characterized by a fast upbeat tempo, accompanied by tambourines, and is among the most recognized forms of traditional southern Italian music. He has shared a comprehensive background to the music and the dance, as well as a video clip showing the Tarantella as it is performed in Apulia Italy as a kind of healing dance after a woman is bitten by a wolf spider, according to legend, which also says that, through sweating, the venomous poison of the Wolfspider leaves the woman’s body and makes her healthy again. That’s why the Tarantella is also called ‘Dance of the Spider’.

it’s a fascinating dance, and song – and myth/legend …. and wow, aren’t those tambourines hypnotic in their rhythm? I was entranced by some of the videos I watched – whoot!
