My response to Carpe Diem Tan Renga Challenge 2018 Chained Together III: the dim glow of a campfire

Today we have another episode of the Hineri feature, in which we are given the second stanza of approximately fourteen syllables over two lines. This time it is based on a quotation from a Japanese novelist:
