Imperatives for an April Morning

Give me heat on this chilly April morning!
Find me some signs of spring:
blushing apparitions of flowers shining
through mist; a lark soaring

or even a disconsolate heron will do.
Bring me back a wood pigeon’s throaty coo,
a twig of yellow catkins, red and blue
tulips, and a primrose or two.

Gather me a bouquet of spring
to warm me up this morning,
while I fill the kettle, make it sing
for a cup of tea to get us going.

Until the sun comes out, give me spring
on this chilly April morning!

On the nineteenth day of NaPoWriMo we are writing poems that start with a command. It could be as uncomplicated as “Look,” as plaintive as “Come back,” or as silly as “Don’t you even think about putting that hot sauce in your hair.”

  1. I really like what you’ve done with this prompt … And gosh, is it ever chilly. I finally gave up and turned the central heating on just to take the chill out of the air.

  2. Great (& timely) work indeed, KR. Thanks.
It’s chilly here, too, or at least I ASSUME it’s chilly because I’m not wading out into those new-fallen several inches of snow to find out for sure….
