Three Things

Little tiger Mojo won’t go beyond
the corkscrew willow,
while I wander to the end,
to the garden gate,
lean against the warm wood
and watch a boat bob,
tethered by a frayed rope
that clink clink clinks.
The long grass beneath
the silver birch is a mass of dots,
forget-me-nots
and pink weeds
the name of which is lost
to the breeze
that ruffles the wild meadow
into a pointillist frieze.
Mojo waits for me,
patting dandelions,
perhaps wishing she was a lion.
She follows me back into the house,
tail up, happy little squeaks
emitting from her little tiger mouth.

It’s Tuesday at the dVerse Poets Pub, where our Poetics host is Sarah, and we’re writing about what makes us happy.

Sarah tells us that one of the things from lockdown that she wanted to keep hold of was taking pleasure in small things, such as a regular walk. She also tells us about a book she read recently, in which the author asked a number of friends to tell her three things that made them happy – and then wove them into poems.

That’s our challenge: choose three things that make us happy or, if there’s somebody else around, ask them for three things that make them happy, and write a poem, weaving in those three things. We can tell our readers what they are, or leave them to guess.

Sarah has given us a couple of delightful examples from the book.

BY THE WAY, DON’T FORGET THAT WE HAVE TWO OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE A POEM AT OLN LIVE THIS WEEK; THE FIRST IS ON THURSDAY AND THE SECOND IS ON SATURDAY.

  1. I began reading the most recently posted poems working back to the first … I am in awe of how nature, the peaceful things in life, friendship, loving figured so prominently in the poetry. Yours is a beauty.

  2. 😍😍😍I was so happy to find my assumption correct that Mojo is a cat. She is dear. I love the wording you chose and the way it flows together like a spring day.

This is my favorite part: “Mojo waits for me,
    patting dandelions,
perhaps wishing she was a lion.”

    🦁🥰❤️

    1. Thank you so much, Melissa! I have two cats, the other one is Luna and Mojo is the youngest. She is a proper little character. Both cats are shy of other humans but very loving to us. Lap cats, the pair of them.

  3. I love those white dots and the pink ones that have lost their name. That’s wild to me, the kind of thing that makes me happy. Our Trixie doesn’t go far these days. She’s fifteen now and has her dignity to preserve. The mad one has never gone outside. It frightens her.

    1. They haven’t been going out so much recently as we’ve had workmen in removing the asbestos roof off a very old shed before it was demolished, Now there are other workmen laying a patio and putting up fences and trellis. Luna and Mojo are so shy of strangers., they hide under the bed until they’ve gone. Luna was out most of the night and Mojo slept on the bed with me as usual.
