A Norfolk July

In Norfolk, we’re surrounded
by water:
the sea, the Broads, and rain’s
no stranger.
Overnight downpours drench
field and garden,
fill water butts, gutters, and rain-
drops sparkle
on the plants on my patio,
where green dill
fronds unfurl and the lavender
is purple.

It’s Quadrille Monday at the dVerse Poets Pub with our host, De, who says she is here ’to make a poetic splash’ with our ‘pithy little poem of precisely 44 words, not counting the title, and including one word we provide’.

De says that the word she has provided ‘makes up 71% of the earth’s surface. Life cannot survive without it. We drink it, wash with it, swim in it, and try to conserve it. Ah, yes. Good ol’ H2O’. Today, we are pouring some form of the word water into our poems. She has also given us some ideas for words that contain water, together with an excerpt from and an example of poems about water by Patrick Rosal and Sylvia Plath.

  2. Love how your water produces such greenery.
We have fennel plants that are about two metres tall with lovely yellow flowers and ferny leaves. I always thought dill was the seeds of fennel, but I’m obviously mistaken!
