The silence is like falling snow, no fluttering leaves to let us know that they are there. These stalwart giants grow in ranks, an army of coniferous darkness. Slow and steadfast, they sew with aromatic needles a pine forest that secretly longs to glow. Kim M. Russell, 21st August 2023

It’s Monday and at the dVerse Poets Pub it’s quadrille day, when we write poems of exactly forty-four words, including a given word. This week De is our host, and she wants us to pine away. She inspires us with the pine trees of Oregon, the sweetness of a pineapple, and a poem by Yone Nuguchi, as well as links to other poems on the topic of pines. She says we can use ‘pine’ as a noun, verb, or adjective, or we can play around with it and invent our own words.
Oh.. but it does glow, it’s just the pines don’t know it yet.

I kind of gave a nod to the Christmas tree in Hans Christian Andersen’s story.

Love the shape of this poem, a pine tree/forest with aromatic needles. I have one in the backyard and its a marvel to watch it grow, steadfast over the years.

Thank you, Grace. Sadly, it’s one tree that we don’t have in our leafy garden.

I agree with Laura about the silence. A beautiful poem, and so clever to make it the tree shape without distracting from the lovely flow of words.
