Take This Garden

Take this garden
and inhale its fragrance
spilling in the dark.

Take this dawn
before the sunrise
and the singing of the lark.

Take this honeysuckle
climbing the cherry tree
and frothing down its bark.

Take this sunrise
and embrace the morning star
as it travels in its arc.

Kim M. Russell. 20th September 2023

It’s Wednesday and time to ‘Take This Poem’ over to What’s Going On, where the prompt is inspired by a poem from Elizabeth Willis. It starts with the following lines:

“Take this spoon
from me, this cudgel,
this axe.
Take this bowl
this kettle, this
continental plate.”

Mary says that we might want to write in the style of this poem, going from one idea to another.  It has a kind of rhythm and a particular shape, with which we may or may not want to work.

Another is to think of one thing on which to focus and write a multi-line poem about that.  For example:  Take this beautiful day…, Take my closet full of…,  Take this ocean…, etc.

  1. Kim,
A very vivid visit into your garden poem. It’s so rewarding to be able to immerse yourself into all the goodness you are surrounded by..there’s nothing like the scent of honeysuckle, to bring a sense of gratitude…a lovely poetic reflection…

  2. You have written a stunning poem, with images that appeal to different senses, Kim. I like the way you took the form of the prompt poem and ‘ran with it.’ My favorite stanza is the last one! So glad you made it this week.
