Goodbye January

Not long ago, sharp winter days
raised the curtain on January.
Wary birds battled frost. Imagine

nicotine dragon-breath clouds,
shrouds of icy fog curling,
whirling through the sky.

Goodbye to the bitter cold.
Bold spring blossoms will soon appear.
Cheer February in its glory.

Kim M. Russell, 5th February 2024

It’s Monday and, at the dVerse Poets Pub, Lillian is our host for the Quadrille, where we are writing poems of just forty-four words including some form of the word ‘imagine’. I’ve tried my hand at Jane Dougherty’s Dragon Tail poem.

    1. It has been brighter and warmer recently, and then this afternoon I saw the forecast for the end of this week – temperatures to drop with the possibility of rain and snow!

  1. Goodbye to the bitter cold of January….that’s exactly what we thought on January 4th as we boarded the plane for San Diego, California! 🙂 Your “nicotine dragon-breath clouds’ – what an image! You and Bjorn are imagining dragons today!

  2. I’m pleased you had a go at a serpent’s tail, Kim 🙂 The rhymes flow beautifully without appearing contrived. If you could just tweak it to end on the same word or very close rhyme, it would be perfection.
Our ‘bitter cold’ was a day at 2°c and a couple at 5°c max. It’s just unpleasant now, foggy and damp and colder than it should be. The flowers are busy though.

There is definitely more light, and right now, it’s warm for February, but we often have our worst snowstorms in February.
