Lost

I think I’ve
lost my mind; it’s been
a while since I felt anything. I locked
myself away in case it broke like an egg  inside
my head. If you gave me your
hand, I’d give you my heart,
only it’s shaped
like a box,
and lost with my mind for
the last few weeks.

This week’s dVerse Poets Pub’s Tuesday Poetics is hosted by Melissa. We’re celebrating the birthday of the late Kurt Cobain of the grunge band Nirvana, and she has provided an autobiography, lyrics and music clips.

Our challenge is one of two options:

Either choose at least one line from the given selections to include in a poetic musing of our choice. We are allowed to add punctuation and break up the line and we can the line as end words for a golden shovel;
or listen to one of the songs in its entirety and write about it, either a poem about listening to the song, or inspired by the song.

I’ve chosen a line from my favourite Nirvana song, ‘Heart-shaped Box’, “I’ve been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks”, to write a golden shovel.

  1. “I think I’ve lost my mind . . .
    I locked
myself away in case it broke like an egg inside
    my head.”

I like the idea likening losing one’s mind to an egg breaking in one’s head…..one could think of a hard boiled egg and its breaking and people peeling away the shell, bit by bit…or a raw egg simply cracking….in my mind….the egg is an excellent metaphor here.

  2. So good! It reads like a rock song. “I locked
myself away in case it broke like an egg inside
my head.” I love that line and I love that this is your favorite Nirvana song. I think my favorite is a toss up between “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For a Sunbeam” and “Pennyroyal Tea”. You can just hear the angst and sadness and something comes over me listening to them. I really love his covers of “Lake of Fire” and “The Man Who Sold the World”, too.
