Observations from a Hotel

I would love to observe the universe
in a hotel room almost touching stars.
Spread-eagled on the bed,
meteors and stardust in my head,
the moon and her backing singers
would croon a lullaby, sleep-bringers
and universal dream-weavers,
rocking this would-be astronaut to sleep,
breathless at an altitude of 10,171 feet.

Photo by John McKaveney: Orion. “Taken outside the Kulmhotel Gornergrat Observatory. The Observatory is a hotel in Switzerland, located at an altitude of 10,171 feet.”

It’s the second day of NAPOWRIMO (National Poetry Writing Month) and, at the dVerse Poets Pub, it’s Tuesday Poetics with our host, Lillian.

She invites us to explore the universe with John McKaveney, who has an undergraduate degree in astronomy and astrophysics, is a practising attorney, and a telescope owner with an incredible knowledge of the stars and solar system.

Our challenge is to write a poem (any length, form, etc.) motivated by one of John McKaveney’s photos Lillian has provided; she reminds us to credit John somewhere before or after our poems.

  1. Oh I LOVE how you’ve delved into his photo….and where it was taken and the specifics….and then the poetic imagery of wishing from lying back in the bed….delicious! Love these lines especially
“the moon and her backing singers
    would croon a lullaby,”

  2. Love each line as if there is music symphony in the background. Very creative way approach specially this part: croon a lullaby, sleep-bringers
    and universal dream-weavers,
