You

wake me up in the middle of a dream,
flipping rugs, spreading your hair,
chasing a sock around the bedroom,
thudding up and down the stairs…

and then you hop onto the bed,
trample all over my body before
you arrive on the pillow near my head,
breathe on my cheek and purr…

I love the way you knead my hip,
turning again and again to find the spot,
in which you finally fold into a dip,
until I push away the covers because I’m too hot…

and all the while your sister sleeps
calm and contented at my feet.

Kim M. Russell, 2nd April 2024

It’s day two NaPoWriMo/GloPoWriMo 2024, and the challenge is to write platonic love poems: not about  romantic partners, but some other kind of love, such as  love for a sister or a friend, or even love for a really good Chicago deep dish pizza. The poem should be written directly to the object of affection and should describe at least three memories of engaging with that person/thing.

  1. They do tend to take over, don’t they? To begin with, I thought this poem was going to be about your husband, even though that wouldn’t fit the brief. That rampaging around trying to be quiet…So familiar 🙂

    1. Mojo is currently sitting on the windowsill beside me in the sun and Luna is hiding up stairs. Peace and quiet in the house – my husband is away and will be back tonight. 😊

      1. Quiet here too. Husband is away, Trixie is asleep by the kitchen stove, Ninnie is hiding somewhere, and the dogs are just beginning to agitate to go out. Better get moving, I suppose.
