Bending Towards Autumn

The cool breath
of autumn rises from early
mornings laced with dew,

the golden dustiness of pearly
harvest light, the heady perfume
of marjoram and wild basil,

and the clouds of blue
butterflies that bend the heads
of nodding harebells

before they fly away.

This Monday at the dVerse Poets Pub, Lisa is taking us around the bend with the Quadrille, our poetic form of just 44 words (not counting the title), which includes one word the host provides.

Lisa says: “As the autumn begins in the northern hemisphere and spring begins in the southern, cool air begins to travel, bending around people, places, and things… As seasons change, we bend along with them, putting away one season’s clothes and pulling out another, putting gardening tools away or pulling them back out.”‘Bend’ is the word that” jumped up and raised its hand”, and Lisa gives us not only examples of the different ways the word can b e used, but also of poems by Louise Chandler Moulton, Claude Esteban, John Keats and Luo Binwang.

      1. We’re having what I hope is a final heat wave before autumn. Second blooms of flowers. But some of the trees are starting to show the colors of fall.

    the heady perfume
    of marjoram and wild basil,

You bring the fragrance quickly to my mind.

  2. Oh this is stunning, Kim with autumn personified to start us out and all the sweet scents and sights to follow. I absolutely love your unique use of the quadrille word with “butterflies that bend the heads of nodding harebells”.
