Aqua Aerobics

The calm surface of the pool,
disturbed only by sparkles of light
like fish weaving through ripples,
is broken by a flattering of females,
women of a certain age wading in,
swimsuit clad, smiling and nattering,
happy in the wrinkled map of their
bare skin. The music starts, limbs flail
and water churns in an endeavour
of exercises. Heads bob like seals
among a symphony of splashes
with an undertone of groans.

I wrote this poem for Tuesday’s Top Tweet Tuesday challenge on X (formerly Twitter) to share a poem of 80 words max including an original term of venery (collective noun), imagery, metaphor and a weird simile. I’ve put my back out and can’t go to my twice-weekly aqua aerobics session, so I thought I’d give readers an idea of what I’m missing.
