November Umbrage

Suspicious of a sunny day
as autumn’s glow begins to fade,
I resent the early twilight.
I doubt the early morning frost,
the crunch of leaves the wind has tossed,
despise the temperature at night.
Although snowflakes give me a chill,
their sparkles still give me a thrill,
but I fear deep blankets of white.

This Thursday at the dVerse Poets Pub we are Meeting the Bar with Grace and writing Nove Otto.

Grace tells us that the Nove Otto is a nine-lined poem with 8 syllables per line (isosyllabic) and was created by Scott J. Alcorn. Its rhyme scheme is aacbbcddc. I really like the example she has given, ‘Canebrake Whispers’ by Alcorn.

Our challenge is to write a Nove Otto on one of the suggested themes: November, endings or beginnings, and gratitude. I won’t be around next week as I’m finally getting to spend time with my daughter and grandsons, so here’s an end of November poem.

  1. First, beautifully crafted, flowing so easily, but also you really touched on something there, the reliability of autumn, the despondency, the ill-wind, the feelings one gets with early darkness and other autumn afflictions…
