About Pigs

Don’t believe lies about pigs in muck;
today’s pig is not tomorrow’s bacon;
and don’t expect me to bring good luck.

I love to swim in a cool clear ocean
beneath azure skies and gentle cumuli;
most nights I’m tracking stars and planets –

I really don’t like to boast about it unduly –
I pride myself on my excellent habits
and I’m smart, with poetry in my blood.

All the same, on second thoughts, I can’t resist
the urge sometimes to bathe in mud.

It’s Tuesday Poetics at the dVerse Poets Pub with Melissa who has given us an April Fools challenge with a twist.

She says that most people around the world are familiar with April Fools being a day to play pranks and get up to mischief, and lying has its place in poetry and art, for which she has given us examples.

Melissa says that she came across a fascinating concept while preparing her prompt, in which a poet, Dmitri Reyes, “asserts that our poems should be made up of a ratio of 60% to 40% either way: truth and lies (fiction) / lies and truth.”

With this idea in mind, Melissa asks us to tell her lies in our poetry, using the 60/40 rule as a guide.

Here’s a reworked poem I originally wrote for Visual Verse in August 2019.

    1. Possibly… Our internet connection could go off any time, which is why I linked up so early. It’s still on at the moment, and I’m going to try to read and comment on as many poems as I can.

  1. I was bitten by a pig once, in my youth & can’t even go near one even now, 6 and a half decades later. Every time My Beloved Sandra serves up a nice pork roast, I get my revenge.

    Nice write, Sister. Thanks!

  2. So fun! I’ve heard tell pigs are actually quite intelligent? When humans roll around in the muck (isn’t that happening right now with some politicians) it is disgraceful. When pigs roll around in the muck, they do it to cool off, and provide mud packs for their beauty! hmmm lies and truth here?
