They are lifesavers,
those deep dark nights
away from city lights,
when we gaze
at the Milky Way,
ooh and ah at a starburst,
and go to bed
dreaming
of light travelling
across the universe
to present us
with sweet delights.
Kim M. Russell, 22nd July 2025
It’s Tuesday and time for Poetics at the dVerse Poets Pub, this week with Lillian, who asks, ‘Who has a sweet-tooth?’
Lillian says that she has one and that she cannot have sweets in the house. If she does, she gobbles them all down in a day or two.
Lillian would like us to create a poem using any one or more of the names of sweets she has given in a list. We cannot change the name itself or the order of the words in the name or add any words between the words in the name. We can omit the word ‘bars’, for example in Milky Way Bars.
I chose Milky Way (bars), Lifesavers and Starburst.
Loving this!!! It’s exactly how we feel about our annual two weeks in Provincetown on Cape Cod — standing on the deck oceanside, watching the moon and the stars. Ah yes….I’m entering your poem for sure! Good use of Lifesavers, Starburst and Milky Way….and most especially, the overall generic term of “sweet delights” at the end!

Thank you so much, Lill. I’m feeling sad this evening, having just seen the news that Ozzy Osborne has died.

You wouldn’t have any idea you’d used the names of candy with how seamlessly you blended them in.

Thanks Melissa. I only used the names I knew. Most I have never heard of.

You’ve captured the beauty and magic of gazing up at the sky, Kim.
And thank you, too, for the reminder of the song. I think I had this album. My husband, then boyfriend, was a big Jefferson Airplane/Starship fan.

Thank you, Merril. I still love Jefferson and Grace Slick. I taught my best friend’s younger twin brothers ‘The Baby Tree’, which they sang with gusto!

We are incredibly fortunate in Southeastern Oregon to have the largest international dark sky sanctuary in the world ~~ 2. million acres! My son and I are letting his vacation days accrue to make the drive, plus a few overnights ~~ I can only imagine the starburst gazing. Your poem is lovely, Kim.
