Early Morning Walk

We survive the night
and sing into growing light,
coaxing the sun to brighten up
our early morning walk.
Sparkles reflect in puddles and rills;
we marvel at how light spills
from branches overhead
and feet stamp ghostly music
from crackly leaves and twigs.

It’s Monday again, and we are writing quadrilles, poems of exactly 44 words, with Lisa at the dVerse Poets Pub.  The word she has chosen for us to include is ‘coax’.

Lisa says that ‘coax’ may be used in various grammatical ways, and that the word is a little more than suggestion and a little less than coercion. She has also shared poems using the word ‘coax’ by Amy Lowell, Kathleen Jamie, Jim Cory and Padma Venkatraman.

  1. This poem is a treat to the senses. I especially love

    “and feet stamp ghostly musicfrom crackly leaves and twigs.”

    I’m awake before light, but I’ve been waiting to walk on some mornings till it warms up some!

  2. Oh, how lovely! I was playing with similar thoughts, but in the end I went somewhere else with my Quadrille – just as well, as you have already written this one! (I can hear your Muse saying to mine, as they crossed paths: ‘I’ve got this. But there’s something for you and your poet over there instead.’)
