The end of year approaches
and I am hunkering down,
Avoiding the weak winter sun glinting off
frail filigree and dancing on the sparkling frost.
Instead of opening advent doors
amid lighted candles and Yule trees,
I look back at loved ones who disappeared
from my life this year and cannot shake the loss.
Come New Year, I must still my ghosts,
must learn to believe and trust
that the days and months ahead will outshine
the ones I rush to leave behind.
Kim M. Russell, 16th December 2025

Today is the last Poetics of 2025 at the dVerse Poets Pub, where Punam is hosting with a prompt that asks us to look back one last time at this year and all that unfolded in our lives and the world around us. She has shared some poems on the topic for inspiration.
For today’s prompt, Punam asks us to pick one defining moment or event (personal or global) of this year that describes what 2025 means to us. Or write a poem about how this year has been for us in general.
I have been away the past week or so, and this evening I went on a Christmas Lights Garden Walk at Blickling Hall, so I have taken an old poem from December 2020 and reworked it with a new title.
What a tender and moving poem – it is a difficult time of reflection for many – thinking of those loved ones who have passed – jae

It is hard when so many leaves us… and that to a backdrop of news… we simply have to believe in the light
