Just Between Us

Your cool breeze
is a breath
that lifts my hair,
kisses my ear.

I’m the only one
who’ll hear your voice
in the thundering silence
of this April dawn.

Everyone else is asleep,
deaf to the poem
that hums in my head,
thrums like a guitar string.

I interpret your Morse code
of raindrops, transcribe
your windy whisper into words,
recording our early morning conversation.

The optional prompt for NaPoWriMo Day Six takes inspiration from Yentl van Stokkum’s poem, ‘It’s the Warmest Summer on Record Babe’, which “blends casual, almost blasé phrasing with surreal events like getting advice from a bumblebee”. Our challenge is to write poems with a breezy, conversational tone, while including at least one thing that could only happen in a dream.

I have reworked an old poem from 2018.
