Oh, to be
as carefree
as a bird:
to hop,
to fly and soar,
and sing with a melodic trill;
a morning bird
sharing the word
upon a windowsill,
in a bush or on a branch of a tree,
just being carefree,
being me.
Kim M. Russell, 27th July 2026

This Monday at the dVerse Poets Pub we are quadrilling without a care in the world with Sanaa.
Yes, we are writing tiny little nuggets of a poem that is an invention of dVerse’s own design: exactly 44 words, including one word that we provide – and that word is ‘care’.
Sanaa points us to words that contain our prompt word, such as careful, careless, caring, careworn, caretaker, caregiver, carefulness, carelessness etc. as well as sharing examples of poems by W.H. Davies and James Grengs.
This is absolutely stunning, Kim! ❤️❤️ I love the idea of being carefree as a bird. It is necessary at times, given the turmoil and chaos in the world.

I am fascinated by birds, a bird photographer (rank amateur) and a baby birder (not good enough yet to be a real birder) and as such, your poem speaks to me, sings to me, beckons me to write about birds. I love this especially:
“a morning bird
sharing the word
upon a windowsill”
It’s very, very, very hot here in Southeast Texas right now, but when it isn’t hot (December through February), I sleep with the window next to the bed open, and a morning bird often shares the word upon the windowsill.

Thank you, Kim. Birds are fascinating creatures, the closest remaining to prehistory, and there are so many species, colours, songs…

I like the flow and rhythm here Kim 👏
I wonder where ‘carefree as a bird’ comes from. Birds have a pretty tough life, all things considered!

Kim, I love how the bird’s freedom becomes a gentle image of simply feeling free to be yourself.

LOVE it! Just think….that bird that seems to be always outside my window….I think it’s the same one….what does it see? Can it see us? Does it care? Or is it simply more content with watching the leaves move and looking up at the sky? What is it singing about???
