Keeping it Simple

Some couples don’t like to be the centre of attention but still want to celebrate their love. No flouncy dress, suits or bouquets for them, just casual attire in a local registry office, with only a couple of witnesses, and maybe a drink with friends and family in a nearby pub afterwards. They can’t afford a honeymoon (that will come later when they can finally afford it). However, their wedding night is special, looking up at shimmering stars in a wintry night sky, wondering what the future might bring.

Kim M. Russell, 31st August 2026

On this final day of August we are writing haibun at the dVerse Poets Pub with Mish, who says that “with all that is challenging and disheartening in the world these days… it is imperative to find sources of happiness, hope and love. At the very least, we can reflect on memories that brought us joy. One event that is sure to rejuvenate our hearts is a wedding.”

I enjoyed reading the examples Mish gave by Richard Matta, Jim Norausky and Jim Milks.

For this week’s haibun challenge, Mish would like us to reflect on a wedding: our own, the wedding of friends, family or even a wedding observed from a distance.

  1. A good reminder of how love is the most valuable and celebratory part of it all, not the ceremony, venue or expense. Love the visual I got from your haiku….those “happy frogs in a small pond / a shared lily pad”. I am curious if that is your marriage photo above?

  2. The frogs on their lily pad yes, that says everything. No flounce needed. No performance. Just two people looking up at stars, wondering what comes next together. That registry office photo nearly 34 years ago holds more truth than any grand cathedral ever could. Beautiful, Kim. 💙

  3. Love the smiles in that pic from years ago Kim, just a beautiful poem and haiku. I am the same way I don’t want a lot of flash and clamour, just being with the one you want is more than anyone can ask for! Beautiful job!  💛
