Once upon a time I was a teenage girl

Once upon a time I was a teenage girl

Decades distance me

From sensations of teenage crushes

Choosing the right clothes

Make-up and scent

Preparation and anticipation

The feeling of that first kiss

The danger and excitement

Of frantic fumbles in the dark

Secret conversations

In the red telephone box

On the corner of the street

Envelopes with SWALK

Inscribed on the back

Collections of bus and train tickets

The feeling of loss and separation

On those ordinary school days

Daydreaming about the weekend

And joining my name with his

On the back of an exercise book

The despair and emptiness

At the inevitable end
