Springtime Scribbles

Last year’s fading foliage scrambles

Over the weather-worn garden fence,

Tangling with rampant nettles and brambles,

Snatching and snarling, dark and dense.

Primroses cower among the roots,

Innocent lemon flowery softness,

Custodians of other tender shoots

Full of sap and youthfulness:

Sure signs of spring begin to filter

Through the closing door of winter.
