I wake from a sleepless night
To a noiseless chill
No cockerel crow from across the field
No pigeon coo from the window sill
Everything is silvery still
Where yesterday was green
With signs of spring
This morning
Everything
Is veiled with white
The pillow of the sky
Torn by silent birds’ flight
And the scratch of trees
No breeze
I hold my breath
At winter’s reminder
That it hasn’t gone yet

That’s a disconcerting silence.

Things are just starting to stir – there are five fat pigeons cooing on the electricity cable that crosses our garden and the ice on the rotary washing line is dripping. But the sky looks ominous. We could be in for some more snow. I’m drinking hot tea … oh yes, it’s started to snow again!
