The Owl and the Moon

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Haibun Monday #9 – moon

Owls are truly mesmerising birds, with their moon-round eyes, sharp beaks and talons. Some are beautiful while others are comical; all are fierce hunters, skimming the ground silently to swoop on their prey. I rarely see the owls haunting the silver birch trees that tower at the bottom of our garden, the only signs their hoots and screeches late at night and in the early hours of the morning. When our dog Jasper was still alive, I was walking him late one night and a barn owl glided towards me from the other end of the lane, just above my head. Once all I saw was the shadow of an owl against a full moon.

  1. One of my favorite sights during moonlit nights here in Bermuda, or in my other favorite place on the waters (Provincetown in Cape Cod) is to see a gull’s dark shape soaring across the light of the moon. Loving your imagery here.

  2. I loved your description of the barn owl. How fortunate you are to live among them. I particularly enjoyed thinking about seeing the shadow of an owl against a full moon.

  4. Owls most definitely are mesmerizing. I see them where I live… less frequently than I’d like, but it’s better than not seeing them at all. I love the ghostly wings, lace-tipped. Lovely image.

  5. I love owls, though in Australia we don’t have so many. Somehow this piece reminds me of an occasion when, on a full moon night, one flew in front of our car all the way up the long driveway of the house we lived in then, as if ushering us – a magical experience.
