Song of the Sailor’s Wife

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Poetics – The Music in You – in which Mish has challenged us to write our own songs.

I took my salty tears

And gave them to the sea

When the evening tide turned

It brought them back to me

The ocean cried

The ocean wailed

The day we said goodbye

The day your ship sailed

I took my salty tears

And dried them in the sun

But they trickled through my hands

Turned to sand, one by one

The ocean cried

The ocean wailed

The day we said goodbye

The day your ship sailed

I took my salty tears

And cried them in a dream

Of you in distant olive groves

Shady, cool and green

The ocean cried

The ocean wailed

The day we said goodbye

The day your ship sailed

I took my salty tears

To groves of lemon trees

Where sunshine fell like feathers

On a citrus scented breeze

The ocean cried

The ocean wailed

The day we said goodbye

The day your ship sailed

I took my salty tears

Down to the cemetery

The ship returned without you

Our love’s just a memory

The ocean cried

The ocean wailed

When we said goodbye

The day your ship sailed

  1. Love the art you’ve chosen….and love every word of this sweet sweet song.
    And most especially
    “I took my salty tears
    To groves of lemon trees
    Where sunshine fell like feathers
    On a citrus scented breeze”

I truly believe this should be a song — sung in a hazey club…and people would be misty eyed.
    Well done!
