My response to Carpe Diem #1097 Serenade in D major by Ethel Smyth

Chèvrefeuille has really been doing his homework and brought us a composition by another female composer I hadn’t heard of: Serenade in D major by Ethel Mary Smyth (1858-1944). I am particularly interested because she was an English composer and a member of the women’s suffrage movement. She became a musician against her father’s wishes and attended the Leipzig Conservatory. She was also the first female composer to be made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1922.
