For all the Shattered People

He got on the train, humming
an old German rock song
I haven’t heard for such a long
time it made my eyes sting:
Sonderzug nach Pankow.
Echoes of Udo’s gravelly voice
in the creak and crash
of station noise
brought to mind all the broken people
before the wall came down.
In the shimmering blue
of morning dew,
I shed teardrops for all those people
shattering anew.
