no church bell
no alarm bell
just the body clock warning
and a stormy morning
outside the window
later, the man on the radio
says the Nobel prize for literature
has been awarded to
Kazuo Ishiguro, whose stories
will never let me go
unconsoled in the pale view
of hills, an artist of the floating
world, and so
I return to the remains of the day
Kim M. Russell, 2017

Today I’m hosting dVerse Poets Pub’s Open Link Night.
OLN is when we choose any one of our poems to share. There is no prompt and there are no specific instructions to follow. However, our extra inspiration is the announcement of the winner of the Nobel prize for literature: Kazuo Ishiguro was awarded for being a writer who “in novels of great emotional force, has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world”.
Love how you mixed in all the titles of the books, they are great and you put me in the place of Britain from the first line to the last. So glad that it was a real author winning this time.

I haven’t read anything by him. I will have to try some of his stories.

I haven’t either, Frank but I intend to. What will you choose to read first, do you think?

I loved Anthony Hopkin’s restrained performance in the movie. It’s long past time for me to read the novel. Thank you for hosting, Kim, and for this persuasive tribute!

Such a clever conjuring of the day and its remains – and loved the broken line – ‘will never let me go / unconsoled’.

Lovely mood in this poem and I agree; his work will not let me go, either. (As I recall, I made an allusion to Remains in one of my poems these past few months…)

Nice! Gave a me a smile. This could have sounded forced but it doesn’t. Love it when the rhyme is surprising but works perfectly.

I love how you worked the titles into your poem. It’s time to re-read, and also watch again the movie, Remains of the Day.

Clever title and poem to follow. I have not read him either and though I will add him to my wish list the reality is life is so busy right now that reading poems online is as much reading as I get to do.

Great poem. I’m ignorant of his work as well. I’ll have to check him out.
