We rise to weak sun in porcelain skies.
Blizzards have gathered and frost lies
hard under thick white blankets: a landscape
of sleeping giants, mountains and steppes.
Snow feathers land on a bare black hedge
where, Christmas card cute, with sharp black eye
and red breast burning against the snow,
a robin reminds us that this winter’s day
will end in a sunset’s fiery glow.

My response to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads Micro Poetry: Fire and Ice
Kerry is our host this weekend and she has shared a wonderful quote by Friedrich Nietzsche: “It is my ambition to say in ten sentences what others say in a whole book.” She has also shared a poem by Robert Frost, entitled ‘Fire and Ice’, which consists of just nine lines.
Our challenge is to write a poem of no more than ten lines, with ‘Fire and Ice’ as the frame of reference.
This is exactly how the morning looked like here… I did go for a run, and the image of the porcelain sky really caught me.

Our porcelain sky is stained with cloud today, very dreary.

There’s a torpor to the lay of snowbound land, slow and whitely undulate: the mind would vanish in it were it not for the note of surprise, bringing us back to the alternation which rhythms nature. The texture of the former as supple as the grace note turned asterisk into exclamation point. Well done Kim!

I love your porcelain skies and how the poem circles back at the end. But I am most taken by the line:
Snow feathers land on a bare black hedge
I love the contrast of visual elements.

Gorgeous.
We don’t get snow, but I’m still craving that white blanket (a different kind) and a fiery sunset. I hate winter.
