His cry’s a stentorian
swoop in the azure,
draws curlicues in
and out of the clouds.
Apart from the flock,
with its dodging and fighting,
he lifts up his beak
and whispers of wind.
He lowers his feet,
curves his wings,
scrawls a wake,
a poem in water
with fricative feathers,
a lone gull’s sonnet to the sea.
Kim M. Russell, 2018

My poem for dVerse Poets Pub Open Link Night
This Thursday I’m hosting Open Link Night. Come on over and share a poem with us.
I so love where this took you… seagulls are amazing and also so resilient and strong… love the fricative feathers… that is such a surprising turn of words.

There’s a lot of energy in this poem, Kim, it swoops and squawks with the gulls.

Your choice of words are mighty superb!
The language in your vocabulary has taken a flight to the beauty of the stars.
Outstanding write. 🙂

This is beautiful, Kim! The last line is just….beautiful. I wonder if you wrote these words while in Venice….or back home? Just wondering-if the magic of Venice infused this?

Thank you, Viv! The poem kind of germinated while I was taking the photos in Venice but I wrote it at home this week.

Great lines…. scrawling a wake…a poem in the surf is and interesting concept. A fleeting one for sure!

I can see how a seagull’s flight is a sonnet to the sea.

He lowers his feet,
curves his wings,
scrawls a wake,
…. oh to have the ease and freedom to soar, dip, swoop and scrawl …… that is such a fantastic word to have chosen Kim ….. it really is brilliant! Loved riding the currents with this fine fellow!

I love seagulls and your poem, which soars and dives just like the seagull.
