I get drunk on poetry and music,
no alcohol required.
You can keep your wine and beer;
I love the cool, clear
trickle of unadulterated nectar,
must of grape and amber glow
of apple and pear. No acidic
burn of embarrassment, no hang-
over, no regrets. I can still
laugh at cheesy jokes,
sing along to some old romantic tune –
throw rocks at the man in the moon.
Kim M. Russell, 2018

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Tuesday Poetics: This one’s on me, also linked to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads Tuesday Platform
This Tuesday Paul is behind the dVerse poets Pub bar, serving free virtual drinks all night on him. He says that the real selection on offer is the talent of the group to create word wizardry from any prompt. He asks the question: what if we combine those two, poems and drink? In other words, share poems about drinking.
Paul says that the drink need not be alcoholic and we may want to write a poem when we’re drunk: on whisky, on love or on life. For inspiration he asks us to check Baudelaire and has shared a poem by Evelyn Duncan, called ‘Picking Up’.
The after effects of alcohol often make me wish I didn’t have the drink and I usually don’t. One can get drunk on poetry and music with better after effects.

Wonderful addition to the bar Kim. I can see a rock n roll song being penned here. No Alcohol Required. Blues I think.

Thank you, Viv. I’m thinking of concocting some dirty non-alcoholic cocktails for diabetics – not sure where to start though 🙂

I always think there’s plenty of fun in being the sober one, laughing at the ridiculous things your friends do and no hangovers!

Great poem Kim! I agree… poetry can leave one quite intoxicated … and with a hangover of the hook for days to come or even a life time…..
