Do butterflies get drunk

on fermenting sap and pollen,
like wasps and bees?

And are there epic stories
imprinted on wings that flicker as they fly,
quirky cartoons like the ones we drew
in the corners of our exercise books?

I’ll have to wait
until drowsy summer days, when I’ll hide

in the long grass behind the willow
and wait for old world swallow-
tails, red admirals and cabbage whites
to play back their Technicolor beauty.

My response to Imaginary Garden with Real Toads Fireblossom Friday: Ask a Question

Shay is back with another poetry challenge. She says that she often has a particular song on her that asks the question: ‘Do spacemen pass dead souls on their way to the moon?’ and also refers to the novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?

Shay would like us to write poems that ask interesting and original questions.

  1. Oh how I remember this as a child lying in the long grass and wild flowers with bees buzzing, butterlies fluttering and realizing how beautiful life can be. Mind you I also remember doing the same with a girlfriend from school and being able to kiss her for the first time. I don’t know about the butterfly but back then I was was drunk with love for the first time!
