you cooked me a meal
so delicious I barely stopped
between mouthfuls
the richness of its flavour
imprinted on my tongue
oblivious to the knowledge
that it wouldn’t last for long
I wiped my lips on a napkin
wishing for another taste
ignoring the red wine
in my glass in case
the piquancy went to waste

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Tuesday Poetics: Impermanence
Merril is our host for this week’s Poetics, and she tells us that she has been thinking about impermanence, something many poets have written about. She has given us examples from Basho, Robert Frost, Yeats and Jane Hirshfield.
Merril says that there are all types of impermanence, which can be a good thing, hence today’s challenge is to think about impermanence, things that are transient, or things that have passed their time, something different or unusual, and write poems about it, in any style or form.
This is as delicious as those plums left in the fridge… don’t know why it made me think of William Carlos Williams.

The taste of food doesn’t last long, but there are memories of it.

Oh this is perfect, Kim! I know exactly what you mean about wanting to keep those flavors in your mouth for a while.

Mmm, yes, sometimes you really don’t want to wash that taste away. Perfect impermanence.

The wine might have complemented the taste. If it didn’t you could always go back and have another forkful… How to make impermanence permanent 🙂

Mmm, some tastes leave a permanent impression, recalled by their scent years later. Nice thought.

Food memories and cooking smells that make me salivate, yes–food is practical and necessary, but thank God for taste buds.

Even when I chew slowly, delicious meals are over too soon.

That’s the sad thing. I remember when I was a child, the last one at the table trying hard not to gag on cold gristle.

A perfect meal should last forever – but it never does.

Ah, the challenge, to savor each bite, when each bite wants so much to immediately follow the next!

What can take hours to prepare is consumed in a flash. This is so lovely Kim.
