What’s Going On?

Each walk reveals autumn’s treasures:
late blooming flowers, nuts and berries
illuminate ditches and hedges,
ruby haws stud green leaves,
and sunflowers linger between harvest sheaves.

August’s visitors are long gone;
daughter, son-in-law and grandsons
have left a trace of joy behind,
and they are always on my mind
as I walk the country lanes.

I know I will see them again
when the youngest will measure
a full year on planet Earth –
I’ll be there to celebrate this Halloween
as I did last year for his birth.

I’m delighted that Sherry, Mary, Susan and Sumana, the team from the former Poets United, have launched a new weekly prompt site, called ‘What’s Going On?’ There’s going to be a prompt every Wednesday, with the hosts taking turns. We are starting by listening to and taking inspiration from of the Four Non Blondes song ‘What’s Up?’ from 1992 – I remember it well. We can write a poem in response to the song; write ‘what’s going on’ in the pattern of the song, as a ballad or a narrative poem; introduce ourselves or one part of ourselves in a poem that answers the question “what’s going on for you?” ; or write a poem that unmasks something we thought was going on.

  4. “I know I will see them again . . . ” And just like that–the autumn, the family, the peace and surety–you are a wealthy woman. I’m so happy for what you have going on, and happy that you are here!

  5. Kim,
A very seasonal review of the year so far…thoughts turn to family and friends as the year’s end seems closer…time moves us so fast these days..What’s going on…the pace!

  6. The prompt invites us to join a thought “in media res,” mid-walk as you do so sweetly here – between summer and Halloween, reaping autumn reflections on kin and kind. Its verbal reisling – sweet, cool, effervescent.
