Before he
hibernates among
rusting crackles of leaves,
a hedgehog lumbers
into the garden.
A cross-sketching of prickles,
he heaves himself through a fence,
a hungry urchin
sniffing out earthworms,
slugs and snails,
ready to make
his winter home
in a pile
of logs.

I wasn’t back in time to write a poem on Monday for this week’s quadrille for our dVerse Poets Pub host, Mish, but here’s a quick 44 word poem including the word ‘sketch’.
I would love a hedgehog in our garden, but it has been years since I saw one even as roadkill.

Love that you found a use for the word “cross-sketching”. I was hoping someone would. This is a sweet quadrille, so observational of this little creature’s activities. I always wonder how all the little critters manage to find shelter for the winter……besides under my porch.

Thank you, Mish. It’s heartwarming to know that there are hedgehog charities doing excellent work. We have a hedgehog-friendly garden.

I hoped it would look a bit like a hedgehog if you turn it sideways. Not sure if I succeeded.

I love this, Kim! We don’t have hedgehogs here. They’re so cute.

I like hedgehogs, also know here as urchins or, particularly in Norfolk, hodmedods,

I thought that perhaps he was a cold-blooded snake.

Ohhhh such a perfect habitat/nature/animal image you portray with your words here! Even without the illustration you’ve posted. Love this one!
