Hibernation

Before he
hibernates among
rusting crackles of leaves,
a hedgehog lumbers
into the garden.
A cross-sketching of prickles,
he heaves himself through a fence,
a hungry urchin
sniffing out earthworms,
slugs and snails,
ready to make
his winter home
in a pile
of logs.

I wasn’t back in time to write a poem on Monday for this week’s quadrille for our dVerse Poets Pub host, Mish, but here’s a quick 44 word poem including the word ‘sketch’.

  1. Love that you found a use for the word “cross-sketching”. I was hoping someone would. This is a sweet quadrille, so observational of this little creature’s activities. I always wonder how all the little critters manage to find shelter for the winter……besides under my porch.
