The Night Circus

It’s a circus of dreams, clouds,
ice and magic, open only at night,
in tents striped black and white.

It appears to dreamers,
sometimes joyous, often tragic,
enraptured by the mystery and magic.

Centre stage, two young magicians,
well-matched in skills and wit,
impelled by the shadowy circus to pit

themselves against each other, discover
love in circus shadows and maybe death
in the passion of each other’s breath.

It’s day one of NaPoWriMo/GloPoWriMo 2024, and today’s challenge is to write poems that recount the plots, or some portion of the plots, of novels that we remember having liked but haven’t read in a long time. I have chosen to write about The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, which I loved so much I read it twice over, albeit many years ago. Now I think I’ll read it again when I’ve got through my current bedside pile.

I just realised that I wrote a poem about this book back in 2017! You can read it here.

  1. Such effortless rhyme and storytelling, Kim, with easy frame by frame visuals. I can imagine this being performed, its theatrical elements would lend itself well as a performance poem 🙂
