Your forbidden glucose-
ridden sweetness
beckons from the confines
of a Delft-blue dish.
Three fat dollops
of fat-free yogurt,
ice cold and fresh
from the fridge,
cover your contours
of fruit and nut-
studded oat clusters.
And you wait
for a spoon to break
your golden crispness
while I anticipate
the first bite of crunchiness.

On the ninth day of Na/GloPoWriMo, the optional prompt takes its inspiration from Pablo Neruda, the Chilean-born poet and Nobel Prize Winner, who had a penchant for writing often long poems of appreciation for very common or mundane things, such as ‘Ode to the Dictionary’, ‘Ode to My Socks’ and ‘Ode to a Large Tuna in the Market’.
We are writing odes celebrating everyday objects. As you may have gathered, I was about to eat my breakfast when I read the prompt – I wish I’d taken a photograph of it!
Nice, Kim. Makes me want to eat my breakfast now, 4:30 AM. It would be one granola bar of the two pack, I share with Mrs. Jim. I do put a dab of granola in my cereal when I eat cereal, which is not often.
