whole lot of sparkles

sparkle on, twigs in a dazzle of rime
sparkle on, bouquets of drooping icicles
sparkle on, clocks in a tick-tock of time
sparkle on, light off the bells of bicycles

sparkle on, salt of retreating tides
sparkle on, iridescent starlings
sparkle on, diamonds worn by brides
sparkle on, smiles in the eyes of my darlings

sparkle on, vanity in a room of mirrors
sparkle on, dew in a daisy’s eye
sparkle on, music from grand pianos
sparkle on, stars in the clearest sky

It’s day fourteen of Na/GloPoWriMo and at NaPoWriMo we are writing poems of at least ten lines in which each line begins with the same word, a technique called anaphora, which is used to give poems a driving rhythm and/or a sense of puzzlebox mystery. For inspiration we have an essay by Rebecca Hazelton on her students’ “adventures in anaphora” and a contemporary poem that uses anaphora to great effect: Layli Long Soldier’s ‘Whereas’.

I had the Led Zeppelin song ‘Ramble On’ in my head and this poem just appeared.
