Bathing in Green

Drab khaki workaday realities disappear,
become green bubbles in a flood of birdsong,

and the garden is bathed in a green mere,
viridescent ripples echoing all summer long.

Green creeps from grass to leaf to tree, along
each branch, farther than any wings can reach,

over the top of the green-swathed beech
and curly willow, from which a sole foliole,

like a green starfish riding waves to a beach,
shimmering with sunshine, begins to fall.

On the twenty-first day of Na/GloPoWriMo, the optional prompt at NaPoWriMo is to write poems that repeat or focus on a single colour.  We have been given three stunning poems for inspiration: Diane Wakoski’s ‘Blue Monday’, Walter de la Mare’s ‘Silver’, and Dorothea Lasky’s Red Rum’ – no pressure then! I remembered a poem I wrote back in 2019, which I have used as a springboard into green.
