Behind the sofa,
among dust and fluff,
is the perfect place.
It’s just enough
to hide and keep
scary monsters at bay.
I suppose you think
it’s a game we play,
but let me tell you…
it’s not a game
when they go BOO!
Kim M. Russell, 6th October 2025

It’s Monday again, and that means writing quadrilles at the dVerse Poets Pub, this week with De, who wants us to bringon the boo!
She reminds us that we are writing quadrilles, those “short-and-sweet, finely honed lil’ poem[s]” of exactly 44 words (not counting the title) – including one word we here at the Pub provide. She says “let’s hold a pre-Halloween hullabaloo for the word BOO,” which can be used to startle or frighten, or as an exclamation or expression of derision, disapproval, or contempt.
De suggests writing the perspective of Boo Radley from To Kill a Mockingbird, or little Boo from Monsters, Inc.; putting something boo-tifulinto the world; being boo-jee; playing peek-a-boo, amongst other boo-thangs.
a space that offered us that, feel of protectedness, that not all of us had when we were, young children…

I don’t think it would be funny when they go boo. You set the scene for a scary Halloween script.

Very relatable, Kim! I remember those hiding places and I now see my grandchildren doing the same!

Thank you, Carol. My grandchildren love hiding, and the youngest one, who will be three on 31st October, still loves going ‘Boo!’

I remember doing this once. It was the movie King Kong Vs. Godzilla. I think I was about six years old! Nicely written 👏

layers, this took me back to playing that game, and then when I had children, scaring them a little too, but also the hint of it not just being a game in the wider context.
