Come walk with me

on the sulphurous saltmarsh,
where a skylark wavers on the breeze.

Listen as it sings a duet with the reeds,
an unbroken stream of song.

Look up and watch
its spectacular flight,

the way it soars to heavenly heights
and then parachutes back down again.

Now walk with me, back up the stony lane;
let us two leave the marsh behind

and follow the sun until it sinks,
lend our ears to owls’ hoots and nightjars churring

until twilight fades to midnight dark.
Sleep now and dream of the song of the skylark.
