Summer is nearly over when it comes to
fruit, especially peaches. We think
they are so ephemeral that we
must keep them in the fridge so we can
delight in their fuzzy beauty until we eat
their shimmering flesh, swallow a
pink and golden sunset.
We declare ourselves convicted,
guilty of a crime as old as
Lilith — sharing forbidden fruit. We
know what we are.
It would be more of a sin to
let these jewels fall into the
autumnal scented mud.
Kim M. Russell, 30th July 2026

It’s Thursday and, at the dVerse Poets Pub, it’s Open Link Night with Grace, who tells us that it’s also a season of peaches where she lives in Canada, which is why our mini-optional prompt is Peach.
Grace has shared two poems for inspiration, one by Dorianne Laux, called ‘Peach’, and the other by Ellen Bass, ‘Ode to the First Peach’ I enjoyed both of them.
Our mini challenge is to use the titles for our poems and, if a line resonated, include it in the poems, with the credit to the poet.
I really liked these lines from ‘Peach’ and decided to create a golden shovel from them:
“To think we can eat a sunset,
convicted, as we are, to the mud”.
Delicious!

Are you lucky enough to have a peach tree, Kim, for store bought ones, picked unripe for durability and transport, are so often disappointing, and certainly they should not end up in the mud…

Sadly no peaches in our garden, just apples, plums and quinces.

I think we should dare to eat them while we can, while they are in season!
We should swallow that “pink and golden sunset” before night falls.

I enjoyed your take on the peach prompt, Kim. Yes, it is sad to seem them rotting on the ground, although the bees do enjoy them there!
