My response to Jane Dougherty’s Poetry challenge #21: Pantoum Squelching through the muddy marshes, Entanglements of grass and reeds, He swipes at bolshy bulrushes, Crumbles the heads into white seeds. Entanglements of grass and reeds Bending, breaking as he strides by, Crumbles the heads into white seeds, Tossing them upwards to the sky. […]

A tanka after a short break
Norfolk Flatland Flatland is broken By churches, the odd windmill And broken-backed trees Horizon dipping away Under an expansive sky © Kim M. Russell, 2016
Under a Pearly Sky
Yellow-faced finches Flit in the bushes Of the ancient woods. A cold wind rises, Tossing the topmost branches, Dancing with flame-like larch leaves Lining the edge Of a field of sedge, Milky in the early light. It is silent Under a pearly Norfolk sky. ©Kim M. Russell, 2015 Yes, I know, the haiku was supposed […]

North Norfolk Brume
The footpath is beset With nettles drenched in dew; Each drop magnifies a hair, Reflects the season’s cloudy hue. She is the Witch of Hethel, Adorned with mistletoe, In spring with haws and flowers, In winter trimmed with snow. A thirteenth century boundary tree, Her fragrance is not sweet: Herbal larder for the witches And […]
A haiku to the Norfolk horizon
Drama in the sky Clouds and silhouettes in a Norfolk horizon
Sometimes we just have to stand still and take it all in
Standing at dusk A low October sun Skims the panorama At its horizon, Sinking behind Elevated fields. From a nearby copse Comes the whispering And chattering Of birds Settling for the night. A raucous skein of geese Scrawls across The expanding Norfolk sunset A haiku to dusk. Image found on Pinterest
