Early Morning Exaltation

My response to dVerse Poets Pub Poetics : Poetry is for the Birds, inspired by Shakespeare’s Sonnet 29: “the lark at break of day arising / From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven’s gate”.

Up

with the lark’s

early morning exaltation

of exclamation

curlicues and marks

that punctuate the sky

thrillingly trilling high

above open fields

and sand dunes

extravagant tunes

elaborate mating calls

the very voice of spring

suspended

somewhere

overhead

then

slowly

descending
